Radon Testing
Per the US EPA, radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and
overall, the second leading cause of lung cancer.

Southern States is
CERTIFIED to perform Standard and Analytical (S/A) radon
measurement services in accordance with EPA recognized certifying body NEHA.  The S/A
designation is the highest level of measurement certification awarded by NEHA.

At Southern States, we exclusively use the
FemtoTech 510 Continuous Radon
Measurement (CRM)
instrument to determine radon concentrations for real estate
transactions.  This instrument is uniquely suited for real estate transaction measurements
because it incorporates
tamper resistant features not possible with charcoal canister
testing.  The cost of an initial 48 hour CRM test is $1
25 ($100 for a retest).

All measurements performed by Southern States are in accordance with
EPA Standards
of Practice
.  Typically, 48 hours of continuous radon measurement readings are required
for real estate transactions (60 hours total).  The EPA suggests that average radon
measurement concentrations greater than or equal to 4 pCi/L be mitigated.  When
mitigation is suggested, Southern States will assist you in identifying certified mitigation
companies.  The cost to mitigate a typical home ranges from approximately $1500 to
$2500.

Due to the perception of a potential conflict of interest, Southern States does NOT perform
radon mitigation services when radon concentrations exceed the suggested mitigation
threshold value.  We and the EPA believe that the consumer is best served when the
radon test outcome is not linked to additional services such as mitigation.  Additionally, if
radon mitigation is performed, it is advisable that an independent certified radon
measurement company such as Southern States perform the post-mitigation radon
measurement acceptance test.
